Volunteer Training: Keep On Track - Blood Pressure Monitoring Program
The Keep on Track volunteer blood pressure monitoring program at Food Bank for NYC provides free, confidential blood pressure readings for participants while they participate in senior center activities or are waiting for food pantry or community meal service. Food insecure households are at 20% greater risk of hypertension than among other adults, and more than 50% of pantry clients in the US have at least one household member who has been diagnosed with high blood pressure. There are no symptoms of hypertension, but if left uncontrolled, it is a major risk factor for stroke, heart attack, heart failure, and kidney disease. Through Keep on Track, participants are able to have their blood pressure checked at a familiar location without visiting a doctor’s office. Volunteer Duties Include: • Attending two mandatory trainings for blood pressure screening and monitoring provided by DOH • Taking blood pressure measurements using digital monitors and explaining results to participants • Recording results in participant records • Recruiting prospective participants from senior center and from pantry/community dinner line to participate in blood pressure screening/monitoring • Collecting data on number of participants
