2019 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) - TRAINING

Schedule your training to become a Volunteer Tax Preparer this tax season!
Food Bank For New York City's free citywide tax assistance program helps low-income families and individuals take a significant step from food poverty toward self-sufficiency. In the last 15 years, Food Bank’s tax program has put more than $1 billion back into the pockets of hardworking New Yorkers. We rely on dedicated volunteers to support this impactful anti-poverty work.
Whether you have professional financial experience, are studying in a related field, or are excited to gain new skills, we want YOUR help this tax season! Food Bank provides free training and IRS tax certification to allow volunteers of all backgrounds to get involved.
To participate, all volunteers must complete online IRS certification and attend an in-person training. This class is a hands-on learning experience where Food Bank staff will guide you in understanding IRS tax law and reviewing the IRS Basic Level certification, as well providing an overview of our tax return software and what to expect at the tax site working with clients.
Upon completing training, you will be matched to one of our many tax sites across the five boroughs to begin your weekly shifts and help to financially empower your fellow New Yorkers!
PLEASE NOTE the following important information before selecting your desired training date(s):

  • Volunteers new to Food Bank's tax program must attend EITHER a full-day weekend training (9am-5pm) OR attend TWO evenings trainings (6-9:30pm) to complete the same material.
  • Returning volunteers with Food Bank's tax program may elect to attend one of the shorter "refresher" trainings offered on Saturday, January 12th. Trainings on this date are NOT open to new volunteers.
  • All trainings will be held at Food Bank's Tax Services Center at 71 St. Nicholas Ave in Harlem, with the exception of the training offered on Saturday, February 2nd, which will take place at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in Midtown.
