Honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy by joining Food Bank For New York City for a Virtual Day of Service.

In honor of the MLK National Day of Service, Food Bank For New York City will host a Virtual Day of Service on Tuesday, January 16 from 12pm -  1pm. During this event, volunteers are invited to join us from home via Zoom, uniting in an effort to advocate for access to nutritious meals for New York students in the New York State budget.

The hourlong event will kick off with a discussion about the importance of access to healthy, nutritious food for students in NYS and how to advocate for this issue in the state budget process. The project will then move into breakout rooms where volunteers can choose to join:

  1. A youth-friendly activity to create a collective, virtual art advocacy project.

  1. A letter-writing session to write to Governor Kathy Hochul asking for her support of critical student nutrition programs ahead of budget negations.

Many New York students do not have reliable access to nutritious meals. By providing food access to students, New York State can bring budget relief to struggling families, and help New York students succeed.  We invite you to join us in urging our state leaders to support fully funding New York State’s youth nutrition programs.

Food Bank For New York City is one of the largest hunger relief organizations in NYC and partners with over 800 soup kitchens, food pantries, and schools to provide free meals to New Yorkers across the five boroughs. Our mission to empower every New Yorker to achieve food security for good includes advocating for food and resources for our neighbors in need across New York State. Our work relies on both the virtual and in-person support of our volunteers.

  • WHAT TO EXPECT: Food Bank staff members will facilitate the virtual volunteer experience on Zoom, opening the event with a conversation about the importance of food access for students in NYS and its connection to the budget process. Volunteers will then be split into breakout rooms to participate in one of the following activities:

  1. (Family-Friendly) Create a piece of art to contribute to a collective, virtual advocacy project.

  1. Write to Governor Hochul asking for her support of these vital programs.

Volunteers are invited to mail their picture and/or completed letter to Governor Hochul and emailing volunteer@foodbanknyc.org to confirm their letter(s) have been mailed.

Upon request, volunteers can receive confirmation of 1 hour of volunteer service for attending this event and mailing their picture(s)/letter(s). You can gain 1 additional hour of service for sending a photo to Food Bank of your drawing or of you mailing your letter(s).

  • WHEN: Our Virtual Day of Service for MLK Day 2024 will take place via Zoom on Tuesday, January 16, 2023 (MLK Day) from 12pm to 1pm EST. We ask that all volunteers register in advance to receive the link to the virtual event.
