Weekend Community Repack
Project Description
Join Food Bank for New York City this Black History Month, as we bring together volunteers, community leaders, and elected officials for a special day of service, advocacy, and connection. This event blends the love and generosity of Valentine’s Day with the power and legacy of Black History Month, highlighting the role of service in honoring the past and shaping the future.
Why Attend?
- Engage in a powerful discussion with local leaders about the importance of volunteerism and advocacy in building stronger communities.
- Take action by writing thank-you notes to Food Bank staff and letters of advocacy to fight food insecurity.
- Make a direct impact by sorting and repacking food donations for our network of agencies across NYC.
- Network and build community over lunch with fellow volunteers.
Things to Consider:
- Limited onsite storage is available for small personal belongings (i.e., purses), but we cannot guarantee locked storage for larger items like backpacks, laptop bags, etc. We recommend traveling light and leaving valuables at home.
- Please bring a reusable water bottle.
- Volunteers should be prepared to work in a warehouse setting. We ask that volunteers are prepared to stand for the duration of the shift and comfortable with moderate lifting.
- All volunteers must agree to our Volunteer Waiver and Photo Release Waiver in order to participate.
Dress Code:
- Volunteers are expected to present a neat appearance and dress according to the requirements of the volunteer shift.
- We ask that volunteers do not wear revealing attire such as muscle shirts, crop tops, “short shorts” or see-through clothing.
- Sturdy, closed-toe, closed-heel shoes, such as athletic sneakers or boots, are required for safety. Ballet flats, loafers, slides, sandals, flip flops, crocs, and high-heels are not allowed.
- We recommend dressing in warm layers in fall and winter months as our warehouse may be chilly.
- Our staff reserves the right to turn away or reassign volunteers not dressed appropriately for their shift.
Age Requirements:
- Volunteers must be at least 10 years old to participate.
- All volunteers under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent/legal guardian.
- All volunteers under the age of 18 must have our Volunteer Waiver and Photo Release Waiver complete by a parent/legal guardian in advance of their volunteer shift.
- All volunteers under the age of 18 should contact volunteer@foodbanknyc.org at least 3 business days in advance of their first shift to confirm they have met our chaperone and waiver requirements.
- Please note that our capacity to accommodate youth volunteers is subject to availability.
Age Minimum (with Adult): 18+, Minimum Age:18+
