Prep & Serve in West Harlem

As part of Food Bank's response to COVID-19, we have made program adjustments to help prioritize the safety of our clients and volunteers. During all meal services, our clients will receive to-go meals rather than dining on site. During all pantry hours, our clients will receive to-go pantry bags rather than shopping in our pantry space. For all shifts, volunteer support will remain vital. Starting March 2020, our Community Kitchen will be undergoing several renovations to help us better serve New Yorkers in need!
As the renovations take place, there will be a few changes to our Prep & Serve program. Volunteers chop, mix, and prepare food for the next day's meal, serving up to 500 New Yorkers, while a team from our kitchen staff prepares the nightly meal with a partner kitchen offsite. Partway through your shift, you will have a lunch break of 45 minutes with time to eat lunch on site or explore one of the many restaurants in the surrounding area, and when you return there will be cooked food ready to be plated and served! Volunteers will also serve our seniors supper before helping our kitchen staff clean up and prepare the space for the next day.
Anyone preparing food should remove watches, rings, bracelets and all other jewelry on their arms or hands, as well as long earrings or necklaces. Jewelry can fall into the food and pose a health hazard. Medical alert bracelets or a smooth ring such as a wedding band are allowed. While we have a shared locker, please leave all valuables at home.
Dress Code:
- Closed-toed shoes and shirts with sleeves are REQUIRED. No tank tops.
- Long pants or skirts at or below the knee REQUIRED.
- NO Short-shorts.
- For groups of volunteers, we recommend you wear a team color or your corporate t-shirts.
